win2k installation CD won't start from Plextor PX-716SA DVD writer. The writer uses SATA and not PATA cable. The CD boots from my LiteOn CD writer. Do I need to change a setting for the Plextor?

Have you other bootable CDs to try? Assuming device is appearing on boot list in the bios?

Yes I have linux Mepis ISO on CD, I can try it. Does setting CD ROM as boot device in Bios also includes DVD ROM?

Mepis live CD won't boot on the DVD writer so the writer doesn't seem to be bootable. The CD boots on my CD writer.

CD includes DVD (normally). Can depend what settings bios provides. Some have separate settings for type of devices (HD, floppy, optical etc) and specific devices withing type (eg both your CD and DVD writers if both connected)

Will my DVD writer using a SATA cable and not PATA make a difference?

Does it appear in the bios list? How does your bios specify bootable devices? Are you trying it with CD writer connected as well?

BIOS has first, second, third and 'boot other devices' boot options. 'CD-ROM' is a device option, no DVD. I disconnected the CD writer but CD couldn't boot from DVD writer.
