First, I have installed Windows 98se onto a computer and I copied the contents if the cd onto the HDD so that the cd would not be necessary during software/driver installation. Am I correct in assuming that all I should need to install is the WIN98 directory and subfolders? Or are their other things that might be needed from the Windows disk?

Second, and before you say it, I know this probably isn't the right forum but it is the same topic and for all I know the answer may be the same. What folders/directories should be copied to the user's computer to prevent the user from putting the O/S cd into the cd-rom for software/driver installations?

Hi

The \WIN98 directory with all subfolders and files, when copied to C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS gives the default location, just run SETUP from there.

You may need to install third party drivers to the hard disk as well if they are not included in the CD. These can be for any device that would otherwise require installation afterwards.

Thanks for the info on where to put the files. It appears that during my editing I messed up the second question. Basically it is tha same as the first except for Windows XP, 2000, NT etc. ?

For Windows NT/2000/XP, you need the \I386 folder and subfolders from the CD, and instead of running SETUP, you need to run WINNT /b.

However, its far faster to run setup from the CD than the hard disk in these cases.
