I just partioned my hard drive and I fdisk's everything. I am trying to reinstall windows 98SE and I type F:setup, (F: is where the directory is) and it says that is unable to to this in dos mode. Can anyone help

Zygo,

Did you use a bootdisk that has CD-ROM support?
That's a neccessity.

If you've divided you hard drive into 3 partitions, then F: would be your CD-ROM drive.

Just try typing:
F: <and hit Enter>
Then type:
setup <and hit Enter>

Did you reboot to let the drive ids get updated? And can you do a dir f: to see if the cd is readable?
And did you check to see if cd support was operative before you did it? Ed Fair

Any advice I give is my best judgement based on my interpretation of the facts you supply.

Help increase my knowledge by providing some feedback, good or bad, on any advice I have given.

here is the command line perimeters for win98 setup:
change to that drive the cd is located at i.e e: or f:
type cd win98
type xmsmmgr
then type setup
you should be allowed to start the setup process
the command xmsmmgr is the memory module win98 needs to execute the setup process especially if you created your own boot disk with the facts you have stated are you booting from the drive or floppy?
did you format with the /s switch?
so many variables that need to be addressed like how big is the drive and how many partititions is there and did you add the line in config.sys stating LASTDRIVE=()
()=whatever last drive letter you want

It would not allow me to format the drive. I partitioned it and fdisk, but could not format. I tried booting without anything in the drive just to see what happened, and it said it was missing the operating system. when I got to the A: prompt while trying to install, it said that it can run this in dos mode. everytime i tried to setup. And I thought it had to be done in dos.

when you made the boot disk also include the fdisk and type fdisk type y for the first screen and then go thru the motions again of deleting the partition and then adding it again. when that is done do a cold boot and then load the boot disk you created and type format c: /u /s and then wait for it to finish then follow thru with my first post and you should be all set.
