I want to install full windows 98 over my windows 95. When I install the CD-Rom it tells me I need the "Upgrade" version. Then install aborts. Is there anyway to override and install the full version without formatting the hard disc? The manual says it should, but it won't.

This is the reverse of what most people want, but hey...
Find the win.com file in Windows and rename it to win.old.
You may need to do this in dos mode, not a dosbox or prompt.
If it don't work..rename it back
Hit F8 in one second increments at startup to invoke win startup menu...choose "command prompt only"...type these commands an hit "enter" after each; (notice the "blank spaces" in the commands)
-----------------
CD \WINDOWS
ren win.com win.old
------------------
press CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart
If no go;
perform the reverse above
rename the win.old win.com
-----------------
CD \WINDOWS
ren win.old win.com
CD-----------------
and then
Rename the whole WINDOWS folder
-----
ren Windows MyWinOld

TT4U - If he renames the \windows folder he'll get effectively a parallel install - not 'on top'.

Well, i kinda thought maybe, but what the heck is it that tells it to upgrade only....I know it's not the System.ini and Win.ini files cause Setup doesn't parse for these...
I was thinking maybe putting the System.1st file in place of, but not sure....The CDROM must have a way of asking/expecting for 95 System files..
Ya know the OEM version will act like asmexxxxx's prob.
Not sure the "Full Retail" version would

Indeed, I have the oem version of W98, not the "full retail" version. Is there a way to install "over" and not parallel? Do most people want to format their hard drive? Seems like a lot of needless work to me if you can install 98 over 95.

Just to clarify. I was reading another thread re this problem, and it may be important for you to know that I have the oem full 98se version. Are you still sticking to your original instructions? Am I being foolishly nervous about formatting? Is this the best way to go? What do I loose in W98se if I ugrade only, without the format?

Go here;
and use method 3...
Wherever it says OSR2(OEM Service Release 2), substitiute with OEM 98, that's all

Remove all entries from your
C:\windows\start menu\programs\startup and (if exists)
C:\windows\profiles\<username>\programs\startup
before you upgrade

Follow these general tips (#1 and #2) before starting

Use Brand New floppies or burn a CD.....
Back up all your Data...something may go wrong...you may have an old Cdrom Drive which will need DOS drivers on floppy startup disc to operate.....so back them up onto floppy....Try to make a Win98 Startup disc(just in case) by popping in OEM CD and let it AutoRun

or if E: is your CDROM drive letter
go Start>Run> E:\cdsample\autorun\autorun.exe
click OK

and try to use Add/Remove Programs if it comes up from CD onto screen....StartupDisk tab

unrelated to above , though usefull is;
With an OEM 98 you shouldn't need any floppies for anything to run setup/format/fdisk...however I don't know how old your PC and components are....so

wolluf;
If he renames the \windows folder he'll get effectively a parallel install - not 'on top'.
So what.
He'll have the whole 95 directory along side to pick and choose from....the only thing I'm not 100% on is if the data files are lost or not..

Concerning upgrades from a full CD

Try these for info;

have your popup/popunder blocker ready...one per page atleast...I don't like sending people to links that use them, but some decent info here

more links at bottom of page
