i am trying to figure out how to install the full version of win98 over win95. as you know it stops when it realizes that you need to use the upgrade version of win98. i have heard there are ways to overcome this small hurdle, can anyone suggest how?

98 disk in. Boot to hard disk, don't run setup.

Go to c:\win95 or c:\windows that is your install of 95. rename win.com to win.old.

restart your computer and run setup. Install win98 into a folder called win98.

If things go wrong you can rename win.old back to win.com and change one more file and Win95 will work once more.

There was one version I used that didn't like having the desktop subdirectory in place.
And I've found that 98 wants your machine, so it overwrites some boot stuff too. Can't remember that detail. But it was significant on trying to go back. My solution was to use partition magic and boot magic, but that was a solution to another problem that fixed this one also. Ed Fair
