Installing SP1 network install option

I tried to install SP1 by downloading the install file for the network install option, because this meant I could use my fast network connection rather then the dial up connection of the XP PC.

But when I got the install .exe file and try to run it XP tells me that it is not a valid 32bit program.

The amount of time I spent trying to get this to work I might as well have waited for the dial up express install to finish.

Now is Microsoft deliberately posting large (133MB) files which do not actually work or am I missing something. Maybe it is another one of Microsoft's ideas to upset their valued customers (do Microsoft have valued customers). Why does a new PC that I just brought do not have SP1 installed or at least available as a disk in the box (was not SP1 released because Microsoft was breaking trade rules). You can probably tell I am not happy with Microsoft at the moment. I do not like having to spend a whole day to secure a PC so that it is safe to use.

Anyway has any one managed to download and use this file?

"Why does a new PC that I just brought do not have SP1 installed or at least available as a disk in the box"

It all depends on/is subject to the supply chain, but then I haven't heard SP1 is/will be available at dealers.

"But when I got the install .exe file and try to run it XP tells me that it is not a valid 32bit program."

That message is usually an indication of a corrupted download.

Could always order the CD from MS. I had a client download the 133MB file with his 1Mbps wireless connection and burned it to a CD along with Win2000 SP3 and WordPerfect SP2, now I owe him a favor.

Oh, you might want to wait and see if there is a re-release of SP1 as a lot of people (myself included) have had problems after installation. My advice would be to download only the security hotfixes for now.

Never had any problems installing SP-1 on my version. but as stated you need the correct version... the 64 bit will not install on the 32 bit OS and vice versa. Also SP-1 has many black listed SN's included. So if your using one of the BLACK listed SN's ur out of luck. Frank Smith

install.exe? This does not sound right. Try this instead:

First, extract the service pack to a new directory. This
will also test for possible corrupted files in the pack:
start, run,
xpsp1_en_x86.exe /x

give it a directory to extract to.

now go to that directory, and run update.exe

Best,

I have managed to download a working file now. Saved it off to CD so I do not have to do it again.
