Installing NEW W2K External DNS Server - HELP 1

I need some insite on this.. I am not a DNS expert.

We have currently, 2 NT4 external DNS servers. They basically suck. We are going to bring up 2 new W2K External DNS servers to replace them.

We have approx. 100 domains on the NT4 DNS Servers, and I want to export all the zones out of there and then import all the information on the W2K servers. I do NOT want to re-key all this data.

Any suggestions?

I assume your other DNS is BIND
Install DNS on your machine running Windows 2000 Server.

Go to Start | Programs | Administrative Tools and open the DNS console.

Expand Forward Lookup Zones, and right-click on it. Select New Zone, then Standard Secondary, and click Next.

Type the name of the zone to which you're migrating and click Next.

Type the IP address of the DNS server and click Add and then Next.

Click Finish.

Right-click the newly created zone and select Transfer From Master; this copies all of the records to your DNS.

Now you can remove Bind DNS and change the zone type to primary. Right-click on the secondary zone and select Properties. Click Change, select Standard Primary, and click OK. Your Windows 2000 DNS server is now holding the primary zone.

You have to either change the IP address of the Windows 2000 machine to use the IP of the BIND machine (the BIND machine will also need an new IP address) or change the DNS IP address on all your clients to use the IP address of the Windows 2000 DNS machine

I just noticed your old dns was nt4.

Either way it should work. There is a file called boot in w2k and there is a text file in nt4 called .DNS you should be able to import this textfile and restore your zones. You may have to save the .dns file in SystemRoot%\System32\DNS folder

Thanks. I will have to repeat this operation for each zone? I think when the NT4 DNS was set up, each domain we own was set up as a zone - and we have like 100 of them.
