I have applied the various patches including nw50sp6a to my Netware 5.0 Servers, current ds.nlm 7.51
By the way does it matter which Server you do first? ie master.

I now want to install two new Netware 6.5 Servers
to my existing Netware 5.0 tree.
How should you go about this? Do I run deployment manager?
Do I boot from the nw56overlay sp1b cd or
should you create a dos partition first and
do I need to install eDIR.
Thanks for any help
Regards.

Run Deployment manager and it will tell you what you need but I'm sure you will need the NW5 boxes patched up to the lastest service pack. I would boot from the overlay disk JMHO

Beck,
We're doing the exact same thing you are. The first thing you'll need to do is update NDS to 7.62. Conveniently, Novell includes the NW5.0 NDS update files in the NW6.5 SP.
Just run the overlay from a winbloat box (don't boot it, just open it), it'll walk you through everything you might need to do to prep for 6.5.

I just can't say enough about the quality of Novell software. Not only will the NW6.5 routines update ancient (and no longer supported) NOS'es, it does so quickly and flawlessly. Took us about 2 minutes per server to update NDS. We did the servers one at a time, starting with our primary replica.

We came in on a Saturday to do the NDS update, when we could easily have just stayed a little late Friday. Well, I'll learn (that this ain't M$).
