We recently purchased a number of DL380 servers and are now upgrading the memory to 4gb. We have 4 * 512gb chips and 2 * 1gb. Is there any specific order in which the chips must go into the slots?

Check out the link below. It applies to a DL380 G4, I don't know what Generation your servers are but the config should be similar. The section within the link below that you need to look at is on Page 42:
