first run exchange setup with the /forestprep switch on your forest root
then run exchange setup again with the /domainprep switch on each domain you will be deploying exchange in
pretty straight forward from there
this is all assuming of course you are running a win2000 forest and domain
if running NT4, run exchange setup and install the active directory connector (required) first, then walk through the setup
make sure databases and transaction logs are on seperaet disks
transaction logs should be on a mirrored volume if possible, and databases (public and mailbox stores) should be on a RAID 5 volume if possible
like andreh said, were limited on what to tell you cuz we're limited on info from you

I have one main DC, Win2k advance and may possible add two additional later on. I currently have about 50 users and will expand to about 300 later on as we build our WAN. No migration. I'm pretty comfortable with win2k, I've been using it for a few years now.
This is Lennox again. I have proceeded to setup forestprep and domainprep on the server running the active directory. Is this correct? I tried to install exchange right after on a seperate server using the "typical" selection, but it gives me an error saying, "Multiple components cannot be assigned the requested action because:
-setup is unable to access the win 2000 active directory.
-failed to contact the schema master server for this active directory forest.
to run forestrpep you msut be a local admin on the local server, enterprise admin AND a schema admin (domain admin cant hurt either), these permissions are a msut have for forestprep
to run domainprep afterwards you need local admin rights on the local server, and domain admin rights
rerun forestprep as a schema/enterprise admin?
My guiess is, from what it sounds like, if you go into AD users and computer, and go the properties, there are no exchange sleection tabs correct?
forestprep is responsible for adding the additional properties sheets whereas domainprep just prepares individual domains to join the exchange organization
Answer to your previous question, no there isn't any Exchange selection tab in the AD properties.
I'm not having any luck at all. I'm logged into my domain controller as administrator. Inside the administrator properties in AD users and computers, at the "member of" tab, I have selected Administrator, Domain Admin, Enterprise Admin and Schema Admin. I've reinstalled forestprep and domainprep 3 times and if I'm supposed to see an Exchange selection tab, then something is wrong.
after you run forestprep (it could be domain prep), you should have tabs like email, instant messaging, you know, basic mail related crap on the users properties in AD users and computers...if they're not there, then somethings definately wrong. are you jsut working with a forest root and no child domains?
ive never seen it not poulate AD if it wasnt a permissions issue. the error you stated earlier is definately related to forestprep however, as it makes the first connection to AD
are you trying to install this on a member server or the DC itself?
I'm trying to install it on the DC itself. I better give you some historic info on the server.
It used to be a backup DC, we demoted the primary DC and pulled it out which forced the current DC as primary. Also, I installed a copy of Exchange 2000 on this server a few days back and uninstalled it. Don't know if that have anything to do with it. And there are no child domians.
Ok theres your problem, you most likely forgot to transfer the schema and domain naming master operations master roles to the new server to make it the forest root. You're giong to have to sieze those roles now using ntdsutil. then rerun setup as we've gone through...that will fix you i bet...
that would explain why it couldnt write to AD...
If you don't do this, you won't be able to set up child domains or anything most likely
im betting if you look up ntdsutil on microsoft website youll find some documentation on it. i put a link at the bottom of this comment however for you.
If I'm remembering right you can view the roles your DC currently has by typing ntdsutil, and then typing roles.
1. reboot into directory services restore mode
2. open a cmd prompt
3. type in ntdsutil
4. type in roles
5. type in fsmo maintenance
6. type in seize schema master (you probabaly need to reboot after thsi step but im not completely sure, if it doesnt force you to reboot skip to 8)
7. if you had to reboot go through steps 1-5 again
8. after recompleting steps 1-5 (if necessary), type in seize domain naming master
9. Reboot, this server should now be the official forest root
I may be alittle off on the steps but I dont think so, not everyday you have to size a role. But I do bet that this is the problem, it makes perfect sense for the errors you've given me and the steps ive given you not working.
heres a link i found for you that will help if you can understand it at all
keep in mind that you will need another server for an infrastructure master if you plan to make any child domains or additional forests...reason being is that the infratstructure master role cannot update the schema with info from the otehr domains if it is on the same server as a global catalog. with 1 domain, and no additional domains forseeable though (including child domains), you would probabaly be ok to just use 1 DC with all roles.
When you do put the otehr DCs in though, be sure to transfer some of the operations master roles to them as well to help the load on the DCs
