will Active directory install without a network connection? we ran into this problem during my windows 2000 server class. can it be done? or is there possibly something else wrong? every groups server would not install AD.

You don't actually need a network connection but you do need to at least be plugged into a hub, switch, router, etc. Windows will not allow dcpromo if there is no "network" because part of the process is determining other DCs that are present.
