Almost certainly a simple question followed by a "doh" and slap of the forehead, but here goes.

I'm installing a Visioneer 8800 USB scanner on XP Pro. Works like a champ when I'm logged in as an admin. When I log in as a regular user, the computer fails to find the scanner during the login process. I've tried copying my admin profile to the default user profile, no luck.

Any ideas?

Linney,
Really appreciate the help. I was also having trouble installing an HP 5300C (same type problem) so that second link gave me a hint. To solve that one, I had to give the Local User's group Write permission on the HP folder (In Program Files). Soon as I did that, the HP works just fine.

However, that solution doesn't work for the Visioneer. Gave Local User's write permission to the entire C drive (having initially tried just the visioneer folder). No effect. It did work when I logged in as a Power User though. Unfortunately, that's not an option for the group that uses this scanner (High School students-we don't want them to have install permission). So I'm still looking.

Had this problem with my hp scanjet 3300c scanner.
It seems that the software during installation generates a registry key that tells the program info about the scanner.
Unfortunately, the key that is generated only belongs to the user you installed the scanner as (in your case admin).
You need to export this key and import it to all users you want to have access to the scanner.
This is how i did it for my hp scanjet under win 2000

Please you make sure you observe all the precautions involved with editing the registry (MAKE BACKUPS!!!).
1. Log on as Admin
2. Open Regedit
3. open HKEY_LOCALMACHINE\Software\Hewlett Packard
4. copy the whole hp section as for example, hp.reg (save it somewhere you will be able to access it from your regular account).
5. do the same under HKEY_Current User\Software\Hewlett Packard (name this hp2.reg or the like)
6. Log in as your regular account.
7. dbl-click each of these reg files, saved previously, say yes to updating your registry.
8. Reboot and log in with your regular account.

Hope this helps.
