Installing a program starts then blinks off and fails

Hi I am trying to install the Cisco VPN Client v5.0.02.009 onto a Windows XP Pro SP3 laptop and when running the install executable, it pops up with the "Preparing to install" window then blinks off. then something else blinks on and off a couple times and then nothing. I don't know what could causing this.

I've tried reinstalling windows installer to no avail. I have alsofully scanned the computer for malware using malwarebytes and combofix and it comes up clean.

any other thoughts?

Is it a downloadable installer - the VPN software? If so, the download could have gotten corrupted.

Have you tried installing under a different user?

Also, it could be a hardware issue, I guess. You could try checking by downloading, burning, and booting from

http://www.ultimatebootcd.com

and running some tests there. I'd look at RAM/memory first, and the hard drive second.

Also, I'm wondering if it could be a driver issue with the network driver. Perhaps you can find and try a different driver for that?

Is it a 64-bit version of Windows?

Have you tried cleaning out your temp files, or disabling other running program, including Anti Virus etc?



Any logging available?

See if a program like this can tell you what is going on?

If all of the above fails, try a completely different application and try to install it to see if installation is generally broken and not just for this one app.

If so, I have a remedy for that. Save the below in notepad and save it. Rename it to a .REG file and double click it. Ignore everything above and including the pluses.

I will try all these suggestions thank you all.

This install works on other computers. It still does not work as a different user. It is the Cisco client you are able to download from the Cisco site as long as you have a valid support agreement.

Once we upgrade our ASA to v8 we will be able to use the new AnyConnect ssl vpn client. That, I was able to install fine on this laptop. Strange.

I will report back my findings.
