I am running windows 2k pro with office 2k pro.

Everytime I try and start an office application I get the pop up Preparring to install window....it runs for some time and then crashes. It says "The windows installer service could not be accessed. Contact your support personnel to verify that the Windows Installer service is properly registered." When I click ok I get another pop up that says Unable to run this command. When I go into the event viewer I get two errors.

Event ID 7023 Service Control Manager "The Windows installer service terminated with the following error: The system cannot find the file specified."

Event ID 10010 DCOM "The server {000C101C-0000-0000-C000-000000000046} did not register with DCOM within the required timeout."

I have searched on Microsofts site for days as well as eventid.net and have not found a solution yet. I have tried a re-install and a re-pair of windows 2k to no avail. I have tried to re-install office but it will not get past the installer propblem mentioned above. All other programs appear to be working with no problem at all. I am trying at all costs to avoid a complete re-build of this system as I do run some mission critical applications on this machine that I do not want to have to bring down for any length of time. Also, I have tried microsofts Installer Zapper program, but it also hangs at the installation screen with the same above mentioned errors.

Any and all help is as always greatly appreciated.

Cheers!

Office 2K pro often does this when its looking for something extra from the CD. Log on as Admin, and have both CDs handy. Try opening it from there.

Also, you might try to going to M$ Windows Update page and see if it does anything worthwhile....

Running SP2. I will give that a try and post the results.

Thanks for the quick response. Screach.....the sound of your world coming to an end at the sight of the dreaded BSOD!

Unfortunately that did not work I logged into the system as the administrator. Inserted the CD ROM for Office 2k (1) and I get the same hang up at the installer screen. I tried to launch the install from the CD Rom with no go, tried to launch the local program with the CD Rom with no go.

Not really sure what is going on at this point. Any more ideas??? Screach.....the sound of your world coming to an end at the sight of the dreaded BSOD!

try going to the WindowsUpdate site. Might be worth attempting SP3, just in case. Other than that, I'm not sure....if you do attempt sp3, download the network install version. Most people seem to foul up when they try the Express install Scotsdude[bravo]
