Installed WINXP & lost both cdrw

Hi there, I'm new to the forum. Full time student/part time educator in windows office basics. I recentally installed winxp from win98. I do not have a dual boot system. I formatted c: and installed winxp home. Obviously used the cdrom to install, but after install cdroms were not detected. No conflicts in device manager. Could not 'add hardware' either. Checked MicroSoft's website/knowledge base... followed all of their suggestions using regedit to delete upper & lower filters. Tried another process where I xcopied some files from win98 cd into dos, then install winxp over that. Still getting errors. In addition to the cdroms being gone, the licwmi file is missing and now, a new problem, the IEXPLORER file is also missing. I've been working on this for 4 days now and I'm at a loss =( I really need my pc back up for school-finals coming up soon. If anyone could help I would appreciate it, I'll check back here or you can email me johnsorr@colorado.edu
