The printer is HP psc 1315 series. Strangely enough the disk out of the box is from Compusa and it is a 1310 series disk.
As soon as you boot up, says found new hardware, tries to finalize and gets message there was a problem with your new hardware from the systray. Then message comes up "RPC server is unavailable.
-checked services and Remote Procedure Call (RPC) & RPC locater are running.
-Print spooler wasnt, started it even though set to automatic
-Went to setup printer from control panel, said action could not be completed. Went back to services and print spooler quit. Event log said it had terminated unexpectedly. In fact its terminating upon startup.
-There were 13 viruses, 394 instances of spyware/malware. Prior to that almost everything was coming up with error message that said the program had encounterd a problem. Those errors are gone.
-Uninstalled printer & rebooted, letting Windows find device, same error.
-Tried using system restore and went back 5 months way before issue. Same RPC error message, same conditions. Went back to current, virus free point.
-MSCONFIG on general tab was on selective startup, set to normal, still get error.
-In services tab related files to RPC are selected.
In startup group, selected everything, same error
-Related issue I beleive, mrtRate service failed, could not find specified file, according to Event Viewer & CD-RW drive gets e:/ incorrect function, i/o error when a blank disc is inserted & accessed to burn. Sees all other discs fine. Device Manager says its fine.
-So there it is in a nutshell

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have looked online in various places but the things it tells you to do I have so any help would be awesome. Thanks again.

Certainly worth a check with HP to double check that you have the correct installation CD.

These links may give you a bit of help too.

Went to the website for HP and sure enough I typed in 1315 and took me to a page for 1310.
Will try to download from site as opposed to disk, which I am sure is a little outdated. Any more suggestions.

Any ideas how & why it is affecting CD-RW drive? Havent tried reapplying service pack 1 yet. Will inform you of progress soon, Thanks.

For your CD problem make sure the Recording tab on the CD Properties has the "Enable CD recording on this drive" checked.

**UPDATE**
I reapplied the service pack 1 and it was fixed! RPC error fixed and new printer installed. Fuuny how its always the simple things.
CD-RW is still getting message I/O error, incorrect function. There is no Recording tab available. It shows up as CD-ROM. In device manager it shows up as a CD-RW and that it is working correctly. I tried to have windows find a more suitable driver and it was unable to. It works as a CD-ROM perfectly. In services there is a IMAPI CD Burning COM service and it is enabled. I uninstalled, restarted Windows and allowed system to find device. It did, but as a CD-ROM. I have seen this exact error, exact model posted on various forums. But no resolution. Any ideas how to resolve this. Thanks

A usenet posting noted the following:

"Thanks for contacting Microsoft Windows Online Support Team.

- In the case log, you said that Windows XP recognizes the CD-RW, as a CD-ROM.

- The behavior may be that Windows XP could not recognize the CD-RW drive automatically. Let’s perform the following steps to modify the registry to let Windows XP treats the device as the CD-RW.

1. Run Regedit to open the Registry Editor
2. Switch to the following key

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\CD Burning\Drives

– All CD drives show up in same key

– “Drive Type” value determines whether drive is capable of writing and rewriting

01=CD-R Drive

02=CD-RW Drive

03=Write Disabled

3. Note: if you have more than 1 CD-ROM / CD-RW devices installed, you will see the related items under the Drivers. Please change the keys one by one, so you can find the correct key.

The model number is HL-DT-Sl CDRW GCE 8400b and only site I could find a driver is driverguide. Name of file is cdrom.sys but system wont recognize. Download.com has a firmware upgrade, but if it doesnt currently recognize device as a CD-RW dont see how this will help. ARRGGH. Frustating! PLease help. Thanks

Thanks very much for that post linney, much appreciated!! I will try.
