I am trying to flash my BIOS (Dell Dimension XPS Txxx A11 FlashBIOS) in preparation for installing some new hardware. But I get an error message that reads: "This BIOS cannot be reflashed because of installed memory managers."

How do I determine where the "installed memory managers" are, and how do I un-install them? Also, how do I re-install them after flashing the BIOS? (Windows 98)

Would appreciate any help.

Perhaps you can just shut them down.
Do a Ctrl-Alt-Del on the Desktop, and shut down all programs, except Explorer and Systray.
However, if you have to restart the computer during the BIOS upgrade process, then go to Start/Run, type msconfig, click OK/Startup, and uncheck the boxes for all items, except ScanRegistry, System Tray, 2-LoadPowerProfiles, and a firewall(if you use one).

If that does not work, then look in Control Panel/Add-Remove Programs for programs like Cacheman, MemoKit, MemWatcher, WinRAM, etc. You can uninstall them there.
But you may not be able to reinstall them unless you have their original software, or they are free d/l's.

WHOA! You can't install a new BIOS in Windows!

Boot to SAFE MODE COMMAND PROMPT and run the BIOS updating utility from a command line.

Bios has to be flashed from DOS. Not a Dos window from windows. Which means you have to do a boot staight into DOS. That would be the COMMAND PROMPT ONLY selection after hitting F8. The only mem managers would be in the autoexec.bat and config.sys files. If any are there or you even have these two. If you have these two just rename them each to autoexec.ba1 and config.ba1, do your flash. Then rename them back.

If you are unsure. At C:\ type in "ren autoexec.bat autoexec.ba1" without the quotes then hit enter. Do the same for the config.sys. TigerFlight [tiger]
Everyone has their two cents worth. Lets all try to donate our two cents and maybe we all can come up with a Dollars worth of advice!!!!!

No one has much use for them...so it's easy to obtain old boot floppies for DOS...keep several in my toolkit.
Good for establishing a NON Windoze environment.

The advice here is good, but if I were doing it, I'd (in Windows) do a Start/Run/sysedit and save autoexec.bat to autoexec.old and config.sys to config.old...delete the current ones and close out and reboot to dos.

Unless you run apps that rely on it...they're likely empty files, anyway. (you'll see with sysedit)

1 more MOST IMPORTANT thing...read the directions provided and make sure you copy the old one and know how to restore it BEFORE you attempt it.

Read the last paragraph again!
'Cause if ya' do it wrong...the whole thing is DEdoubleD!

After trying the first suggestion without success, and seeing a common theme in the next three suggestions, I revisited the Dell website, and discovered to my chagrin that I failed to follow instructions. I have now successfully updated my BIOS.

Thanks to all, for your help. I really appreciate it!
