OK, first of all I admit, it's partially my fault. I went to MS upgrade center, upgraded to IE6 and at the end of the process got a message saying something about a newer version of a .dll file (filename given) was overwrote by an older version. (Why would MS overwrite a newer file in the first place????!!!! - geesh - other programs I've installed at least pop up a box asking if you want to keep the newer file)

I started to grab pen and paper to write the file name but inadvertantly hit the keyboard and the message went away. I can't remember the filename, but now I'm having all sorts of irritating problems such as printer spool lock ups, Excel 2000 errors, win explorer anomalies, desktop icons not all showing on bootup. Ooops, almost forgot, I'm using Win98SE.
If anyone has any suggestions I'd truly appreciate it. I fear I'm going to have to do the ol' "reinstall everything" grind, but if I can fix it without reinstallation, I'd rather do that.

Thanks for your time

Dave

You can use your 98 CD to do a repair of the original installation, so no re-install necessary. Simply run the CD, and and select the "replace missing and corrupted files"
option after running the setup.

You should re-run the latest 98 service pack after doing this also. Good luck, and Happy Computing

Hello Dave

You could try two things to overcome your problem. Firstly, you could attempt a repair of IE (that's START>SETTINGS>CONTROL PANEL>ADD/REMOVE>IE6.0>choose REPAIR)or go back to MS download site and redownload IE (make sure it's IE6.0SP1). Regards

Dave I have run across this about 4 times you need to download the "Full" version of ie 6.0 sp1 and do a reinstall
do not do a repair when it asks you make sure you do a reinstall and replace the files - this has worked for me 4 out of 4 times - before you do this when the error comes up click the advanced or more info tab and see if the error refers to shdoc401.dll - if so try this suggestion, if you have any questions let me know.
