upon using the setup routine on openoffice i get an error message-"line3; syntax error at token 'E' expected. the cdrom is on the e drive.

I've never heard of anybody getting that sort of error message. If you got OpenOffice via download, I would suspect a corrupted download, which could be checked using md5sum. If you're installing it from a CD provided by a third-party with their own installation routine, then I would suspect the fault lies there.

thanks tony - but i am still mystified. the cd rom was purchased from linux central. they say that it is not their problem. the operating system by the way is xp. what do you think?

I would imagine compatibility with Windows would not be the highest priority for a company with Linux in its name. If you have a fast internet connection, then maybe the best thing would be to download the latest production Windows version (v. 1.1.3 I think) of OpenOffice. I have installed it many times on Windows NT and 2000 and never had any problems; XP shouldn't be any different.

I've installed it several times on XP. The only 'gotcha' is that you have to run setup first to install it globally, then run the setup in Program Files->OpenOffice for each user to set up their own preferences.
