I’ve never run upon this before. I was attempting to install the software for an HP Scan Jet 5100C in a PIII, Win98 box that has 128K of memory.

All programs, except explorer, were shut down; the scanner was NOT connected to the system (as per HP setup instructions for installing the software.) I attempted to load the software, and got the “install shield” box. That part went fine.

At this point the whole system locked, but I could hear the CD still spinning. (CD is a 50X.) I had to physically shut the box down to re-boot. C/A/D did not even work.

I tried loading the software via add/remove software in the control panel, and by letting the CD auto-run.

This box worked fine on another computer in the office, but . . .

Any suggestions? Rattle my grey matter to help me come up with a solution.

DILBERT FOR PRESIDENT!

also, delete temp files in c:\windows\temp. they can cause very frustrating install problems. should be able to delete everything out of there. i ususally put these 3 lines in my win98 boxes.

deltree /y c:\windows\temp
cd\windows
md temp

this will clean them up everytime you boot..

Had a similiar problem with a corel draw installation:
The solution was to
find C:\program files\common files\installshield
Rename Engine and Iscript folders to xxxx.old
then re-install
If that doesn't work reverse the process
to revert files as originally setup.
It seems the software needed to reinstall the "InstallShield" program.

Call HP Tech support. They probably have a reference to this problem in their helpdesk or would at least know some things for you to try.
