Install Win2000 over Win98

I've 'cleaned up' a bit much. In trying to clean up a Presario, I have deleted some of the windows files, himen.sys, dblbuff.sys, ifshlp.sys, emm386.exe, cpqidecd.sys. Botton line, will not boot up indicating missing or corrpted files. I am trying to upgrade to Win2000. However I can't get the system to boot from the Win2000 in the CD drive. Keeps going back to c: blablabla... I've done the F10 and changed the boot to go to cd first, still no good.

How can I install the Win2000 given the above. Still looking but have not found my Win98 disc

I don't undenstand if you have done back-up of your data before installing, or you would like to update the OS without backing-up data.I'm giving you information about the installation, beware of your data!

However, IMHO try one of those:

1. Boot from a floppy disk (if the cd doesn't work) or another bootable device (cd-rom?) and use i386\winnt.exe in the win2000 cd-rom. Back-up data.

2. Create the 4 installation disk. Execute the \bootdisk\makeboot.exe from the win2000 cd. Back-up data.


3.Otherwise, if you can still boot the Win98 OS, use the winnt32 in the windows2000 cd-rom (i386\winnt32.exe)
This will update the system from 98 to 2000 saving data.

Do you have a Win98 Cd? the with the boot option changed to boot first from your Cd (98), boot the computer..If it wont boot, then you must check your Cd drive.If it will boot from that Cd(98), the you must check your Win2000 Cd or use a different one inc ase you can have it.. A+, MCP, CCNA
