Install Visual c++

When I install C++ as part of either visual studio.net or visual studio 6.0, the other languages work fine, but the c++ compiler dies during the build of a new project and will not ever get to the linkage part of the process. Messages are:

Compiling
Sample.cpp

then nothing, it just sits. Can anyone help? I am installing on individual computers as part of a lan. The server controls print sharing and user logins. Any ideas are surely appreciated as I am out of them. Thanks
