Hello everyone,

I' m having some questions about 2000 server.

i have 6 Nt 4 Servers , recently the PDC was replaced, the new server has the Win 2000, the bdc was promoted to PDC during the time the server was off line, the client installed the server as a stand alone server,Now i need to install this new server as a PDC, i think i just have to install the Active directory in the 2000 server ,my question is should i delete the account for this server and create a new as a BDC and then promote this BDC or just install the active Directory and depromote the actual BDC.

Thanks in advance,

Andre

If I'm reading that correctly, the server you want to become the PDC is currently a stand-alone. Is that correct. If it is, I believe you can only make a server a PDC during install. I don't know that you can promote a stand-alone to PDC without re-installing.

Windows 2000 no longer has PDC / BDC. It is only Active Directory DC. When upgrading an NT4 Domain, you must first upgrade the NT4 PDC to Win2000 server. During the upgrade it will detect that it is the PDC and launch the DCPROMO utility to install the AD Domain. In your new domain, the NT4 servers can remain in their BDC capacity but you cannot have an NT4 PDC in an AD domain.

Another way would be to have the Win2000 server start a new domain and migrate the users from the old domain to the new domain. This is not a point and click migrate but I think there are tools or scripts to help with the process.

Hello wcburton,
In the moment i have a Win NT server, that was promoted from BDC to PDC because te PDC failed. the new server that will replace the old PDC is Win 2000, my question is can i have 4 servers with NT and a new PDC with Win 2000.
The problem is that only one of my servers is using Win 2000 and that servers must be Domain Controler, can i launch the DCPROMO utility in that server and install the Active directory.
The accounts from my domain will be erased or changed? what are the steps to this operation?

Thanks in Advance

André
