Hi all,
I am about to install SP2 on our Ex 2003 Server which is running Win3K Server. I heard (back in Nov 05) that Exchange 03 SP2 should be installed FIRST and then Windows 03 server SP1 AFTERwards to prevent errors from occurring. That is of course if Win3K SP1 has not already been installed. Is this still true?
We have not installed Win 03 SP1 yet on our ES for that reason. All other Win03 servers and DC's(2) are up-to date.
Thanks for any info!

I have never had a problem installing in either order.

Just make sure you install the E2k3SP2 on the DCs as well to upgrade the Exchange Tools on the DCs.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Regards,

Mark

Thanks, Mark...I hadnt't heard about installing W2K3SP2 on the DC's until I read another post that (I think it was you)mentioned the same thing...that is really helpful!... so then we will be able to view, change, modify all exchange properties on either DC???

You have to install the Exchange admin tools on the DC, then the SP.

Well, I shouldn't say HAVE TO. Only if you want to have administrative control of Exchange functions from the DC. It's a common configuration.

thanx 58,
I will do that ... the admin tools are on the Exchange CD?

Also, can I install the tools on a Windows XP machine?

I really would like to install it so that I can control things from my own desktop, it is an internal PC in the same domain and just a few steps from the data center, but it would be convenient for me to quickly take a look at things....

Insert the Exchange CD and start the normal Exchange setup. One of the options that you can install is the management tools. Unselect everything else.

Yes, you can install them on an XP machine, but, just like your DC, you have to have the prerequesites installed.

Thanx again,
Another question(s)? Our CD is pretty old...pre-SP1...so after admin pack do I need to install exchange SP1 on the DC's before SP2 or is SP2 cumulative? can I hold off on the DC's and do them later?

You can go right to SP2 and bypass SP1. It is not recommended to allow the DCs to be out of Sync with the Exchange Server.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Regards,

Mark

Yes, thanks, I have installed E3SP2 with no hitch...when I tried to install Windows server SP1 using Windows Update the install failed with an 080072EFE code ...so I downloaded SP1 and it is installing right now... will know the outcome soon..
