Can anyone offer some in-depth insight into how the Temporary Internet files folder works? Specifically, is there a way to copy them a whole folder at a time to another machine to examine them?
I tried to copy the entire folder to a Zip disk (formatted with FAT so there's no streams or extended attributes) on Machine A and then examine the files on Machine B. To my surprise, when I opened the folder I saw the temp files of machine B?!?! I thought the phrase "Temporary Internet Files" might be a reserved shell extension so I renames the folder plus all the subfolders. No dice.
I then tried coping one of the folders to a newly created folder on the Zip disk. In the copy box I could see the filenames of Machine A going by, but when I opened the new folder, the directory showed temp files from B again. Bizarre.
If I copied the contents of one of the folders to another then I got more copies of Machine B files. I'm guessing that I will have to copy the contents of each folder from Machine A individually to look at them on another machine.
There seems to be some kind of SID based shell extension action going on but I would be interested to see if anyone knows the mechanics of it.
