Inputting Ascii

Heres one i am stuck on, and would be gratefull of any assistance. Using a Bar code scanner on a keyboard wedge I am trying to store the keyboard / scanner input to a buffer, without having focus on any particular object, so that I can then compare this input with a $. Does any one know of a way to acheive this?
