I'm trying to make inline oracle db backups that use a script to backup the databases but since each schedule in the the policy uses the default policy or default-application-backup schedule to backup the db's I can't have shedules that have different tape retentions such as a daily for tapes I want to keep for a week, weekend for tapes that I want to keep for a month and end of month for tapes that I want to keep for a year. It seems that if I want to have different retentions for these schedules I'll need to create a new policy for each schedule. I have about 40 db backup policies so that will mean I need 120 policies? This sounds a little to cumbersome to manage.

Hi,

Here's a suggestion of how to do it-
As you wrote -you run "oracle db backups that use a script to backup the databases"

Put all the clients in one class and deal with the retention levels within the schedules:

1) if you are using the User Backup type of schedules (with the bpbackup command) then create 3 schedules with the 3 needed retention levels and make sure the scripts run the correct one depending on the date and day of the month

2) if you are not using User Backups type of schedules (with the bpbackup -i command) create one Full Backup schedule for a daily retention level and put it in the weekdays,
create another Full Backup schedule for the weekly retention level and put it in the weekend.
Then, once a month create a script that changes the retention level of the weekly schedule so it will be kept as a monthky backup.
use the command-
NETBACKUP_INSTALL_PATH/bin/admincmd/bpclschedrep CLASS_NAME SCHED_NAME -rl NEEDED_RETENTION_LEVEL
and again after the backup to change it back.
