Typically a barcode reader returns the text of the barcode. Most barcode readers has software that allows you to open any product (notepad, word, excel etc.) and use their hardware to scan in barcodes from the reader to the current cursor position (meaning cell or line). If I remember correctly the reader (software) will also append a carrage/return (vbNewLine) to the end of the string. I have created a program in the past that the user would set focus to the correct text box, read the barcode, enter other information and hit update. All's I had to do was put a text box on the form to capture the reader.
