Okay here is the scenario:
One NT 4.0 Server running Exchange 5.5
One W2K Server running Exchange 2000.
One W2K DC.
I was in what I thought was the final stages of moving mailboxes off of the old 5.5 server to the new 2000 server. In the process there were 2 mailboxes that couldn't be moved, probably because they have 1GB of data in them. I then had to shutdown both servers to move to new locations as the DNS MX record was changing over the weekend. When I restarted the Exchange 5.5 server, the Information Store wouldn't start. So I attempted to start the service by changing the user. Well then username field name in Startup in Services was greyed out so it couldn't be changed. I have tried starting the service at the command line with the net and sc commands and remotely from the DC but it is no go. So i still need to move those 2 mailboxes but I have to have the IS running to do so. I am getting the following startup errors:
-Event ID: 1000
Source: Useenv
Your profile was not successfully loaded, using the default system profile.
-Event ID:1121
Source: MSExchangeIS
Error Oxfb5 connecting to MS EX server directory service.
-Event ID: 5000
Source: MSEXchangeIS
Same error indicating the service couldn't get started.

Oddly upon examining the services, the SA is running as LocalSystem and I can't get it changed. The IS is also set to run as LocalSystem and can't be changed.

So the questions are:
How can I get the IS to start?
Can I move the mailboxes and reconfigure the routing without having the IS started?

Thanks.
