Can you create an index in the report data source without actually creating the index on the database table?

Maybe.

Do you mean as in an indexed view, or?

What's the intent of this index?

You can enable report bursting indexes under the Database menu, which speeds up reports with saved data.

Consider posting the intent and your environment.

(Had to do a little digging myself) Posted for a co-developer.

She has a report with a custom command (a union query) joined to another table in the database (Informix) The report returns the data that she needs, but runs very slowly. The union query is necessayr because it contains daily transactions table and history transactions table. Needs to get data from both. Informix won't allow a union query to be saved as a view (I'm told by the dba) so the query is part of the report. Looking for a way to increase performance

That help clear it a little?

The solution should be on the database, and I would avoid Unions at all costs anyway.

Ask the DBA to create an SP which populates a temp table from both sources, and then does a select from the temp at the end.
