Index Server won't work

I can't get Index Server to search my intranet. It was working fine in a test environment, but then I stupidely deleted the default catalog in an attempt to tailor it to search only one sub-directory in my folder and now it's not working. At all. I've even tried creating a new catalog and directories to have it search the entire root and it still isn't working. Can somebody give me a step-by-step guide or point me to some documentation on re-applying the default catalog?
