Index Server Error

Searches that include a noise word, such as "and", like in searching for "Facts and" return the following Index Server error page:

Error "Expecting phrase. " (0x8004166a) encountered while processing the query "(facts and) & ! #vpath *\_vti*

Anyone know how to avoid this error and also not let the user see the cryptic error page? Thanks
