Can someone please enlighten me on whether or not a PDF created by Indesign v1.52 is 100% compatible with those created using Acrobat Distiller v5.

Considering Adobe released both sets of software one would assume this to be the case although frequently Indesign PDF files tend to do some very strange things when being rasterised by APS Grafix RIP v5.31 software (e.g. leading characters of shadow type not being rotated with the rest of the page)

Wheras the Distiller PDFs do not seem to have any problems at all.

Quark has the same problem. I would never create a PDF file from the Application. I would always create a PS file first, then use Distiller to create the PDF.

Hello,
The one thing you need to remember is that the distill ability in InDesign is a plug in and not the full version of distiller which comes with the full version of Acrobat.
You have more control and quality using a ps file from InDesign then using Acrobat to create the pdf.
The version of the used with InDesign if 4 but I use Acrobat 5 with mine with no problems. It is compatable with InDesign.
Your best bet would be to use the full verison of Acrobat to get a good PDF.
Good luck

True that ID 1.5 had issues, but has anyone the experience [yet] with ID2 and .PDFs to know if it's any better?

Natively exported PDFs and PDFs from Distiller have two fundamental differences:

1. InDesign's use CID font encoding to support double-byte fonts.
2. InDesign's uses a couple more decimal places for object positioning information.

Both InDesign and Distiller write their PDF in conformance with published standards and Acrobat will work with both.
