hello all, i have an xp-xp "network" that is in fact just a crossover cable, so barely a network at all. this is between a desktop pc that and a new laptop. new to me, that is, it's not really 'new'. however, it would appear that its last owner avoided sp2 like the plague, so upon connecting to the internet the thing went through its endless series of upgrades and restarts.

this took several days due to my lack of restarting the computer. during these days i transferred files over the network of considerable size in small amounts of time, >600MB in around 2 minutes. However, since SP2 was installed, things have gone downhill somewhat. A 1GB file is looking at taking 70 minutes to transfer.

In short:

SP2 - SP1 crossover network, file transfer fine
SP2 - SP2 crossover network, file transfer 35 times slower

When I hook them up with a FireWire cable I get the same results. 70 minutes for 1GB. (I thought FireWire was supposed to be faster anyway?)

What the hell is going on?

Ah! Never mind. Seems to have been something to do with the windows firewall. All fixed.
