Hi,
I use Outlook Express 6, my computer is a Windows/Me and when an email is sent to me, my inbox will display a number showing how many emails I have. Recently I was deleting my emails from the inbox and some how my inbox shows that I still have one message but nothing is showing in the window paine. I tried to delete it and it will not delete. I can not seem to figure out how to free up the inbox of this unknown message. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Within Outlook Express, create anoter folder for temporary storage. Move all the mail that you want to keep out of the inbox an into this new folder. Close Outlook Express and use the Windows Find/Search function to search for inbox.dbx. When you find that file, delete it. Open OE and a new inbox will be created. You can now move all your good messages back.

Hi,
Thank you for the info but when I did as suggested, in my search files it listed the following 12 files:
5 OF: C:\WINDOWS\APPLICATIONDATA\IDENTITIES4 OF: C:\WINDOWS\PROFILES\MYNAME\APPLICATION\DATA
3 OF: C:\WINDOWS\PROFILES\MYFRIENDSNAME\APPLICATION\DATA
I'm not sure which one to give the boot too ???

It appears that this computer has been through a few users and versions of OE.

1. The one you want shouldn't be one of the ones under 'myfriendsname' (unless you're using that identity).
2. Are you using multiple user profiles (different users when when windows starts)? If no, then it probably won't be under 'profiles'. If yes, then it probably will be.
3. The file that you want should have a very recent date (like today).

Because you have so many, let's play it safe. Instead of deleting the file, rename it. When you think you've narrowed it down to the correct inbox, rename the file to inbox.old. That way, if it's the wrong one, you can always change the name back.

Okay thanks...There is and only has been two users for this particular computer. I will look for the most recent date as you mentioned and if not, then I'll just rename the profiles under my name to old and hope for the best I guess...I'll keep you posted...
