Inbound Connections

Hi,
I am having a bit of trouble with inbound connections when the server is
first started and when it is left idle for a while.

When this trouble occurs the server seems to refuse all incoming connections
including ping but outbound will still work. However as soon as I log in to
the server and open something such as internet explorer and accesses the
internet all of the inbound connections will start working.

I have this on two servers so I imagine it must be quite common but I just
can not find anything on google that relates to my problem so I would really
appreciate any help.

Check your power options in control panel, The pc may be going into hybernate, Hard-disks may turn off after inactivity, and also make sure u turn off save power setting for the ethernet adapter. You dont want the ethernet adapter going into sleep mode. I would start with these settings, as they are the most obvious symtoms as u r describing.

I have checked these already and made sure they were turned off so it shouldnt be that causing problems I wouldn't have thought.

When it loses connection, is there any link light activity on the nic card, or are they off?

Hi,
Sorry but it is not really possible for me to tell as the service is remote but from the event log there is nothing to show that the network card was powered down or anything like that.

As a starter for 10, see if there are any latest drivers for your network card. I would also advise checking the NIC configuration to ensure that the speed and duplex are forced to that of your network switch config (ie if the switch is forced to 100Mb Full Duplex, do the same on the server. If they are both set to auto, force both to a speed and duplex).

Also check standard stuff like correct default gateway and subnet mask on the NIC config...

Hi,
Thanks for those suggestions. I installed the latest nForce drivers earlier today which didn't seem to make a change but I have now forced the servers NIC to 100FD and set the switch to 100FD.

I will restart the machine and see what happens in a bit and let you know.

Hi,
I was just wondering if you knew of any kind of setting that would make the network disconnect after a certain idle period. I can't see why there would be one on Windows Server 2003 and also it still does not solve the issue of why it doesn't work on boot.
