This is more of a query than a problem as such - I have recently noticed that my network connection status icon in the task bar isn't showing any activity at all, even when I am using the web. If I double click it to get the Connection Status dialog box, it tells me my status is connected, it gives the correct duration and speed...and yet in the Activity section (bottom half of dialog box) it says that total packets sent and received are both zero.

Now I have no connection issues at all and can access the internet no problem. What I'm wondering is has something disabled this in order to hide unauthorized network access?? Is that even possible to do? And if so, how can I find out if that has happened? Or am I worrying too much...??

Thanks very much

Can you see any activity from "Safe Mode with Networking"? What about any other user in Normal Mode?

Is the Networking tab of the Task Manager working? See the last post on this next link, are you able to get any result either in the Task Manager or the Status page via that?

How to change packets to bytes in XP

Uninstalling the Networks Card driver, rebooting, and letting Windows rediscovering it and re-installing the driver, or even you, yourself, updating the driver, might help?

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right-click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking. Select both boxes.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

Do try malware checks by running your anti virus software and other similar programs, but it is probably just a Windows glitch you are seeing.

Look in SERVICES (START RUN Services.msc) and see if your Network Location Awareness service is running. I disabled that once and I had some curious things going on with my taskbar network icon.
