Importing Flatfiles

[blue]I need to import a flat-file into an Access database. I can make the flat-file delimited or fixed-width. My intention is to automate this process and import the flat-file every day. To do this, I need to create a macro to TransferText. TransferText requires that I specify the transfer type, specification name, table name and file name.

I can figure out 3 out of 4 (probably). The specification name is my current problem. I have no bloody idea what Access is looking for. Access Help indicates that I should select a specification name from the menu. The problem is that there are no specification names in the drop-down.

Begin by importing a smaple file manually....set all the options you need set so the data will come out the way you need it. The, just before you click Finish on the import wizard's final screen, there is an advanced button. Click this and SAVE your import specifications with whatever name you desire...this is the specification name Access wants.

Open the database, go to Tables & click the Import button on the toolbar. Specify your flat file, then click the "Advanced" button on the next screen (file/record details). That takes you to a sort of mini-form where you can build your specification; when you're done, just click "Save" & voilá
