How can I import Excel files into Access 97?

I just installed Access 97 onto system that already has Office 2002 and Win2000.

The GetExternalData > Import function does not list Files of Type .xls. The Import function has a suggestion at the bottom to Add/Remove, Data Access, and Change Option which added more file types, but not .xls. I also ran \\VALUPACK\DATAACC\DATAACC.exe trying to respect the ValuePack hint, but still no .xls.

How can I import Excel files into Access 97?

Have you tried File "Save As" the Excel spreadsheet in Excel 97 - 2000 or 95 format?

Then import the 95 / 97 spreadsheet which now uses the older format that Access 97 should recognize.

Hello PAY9_

Missing ISAM drivers in Access 97
One day after a system hangup I found I could no longer save my tables or reports as text or Excel files. I kept getting a message that the relevant ISAM drivers were missing. And in the 'Save as' dialog box, several file types were missing. As you do, I reinstalled Access 97 (no good), reinstalled Office 97 (no good), then removed and again reinstalled Office 97 (still no good!!). Once again the Knowledge base came to the rescue and yet another built-in Access bug was fixed. The following is from article Q171955.

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Access 97, you point to Get External Data on the File menu and then Import, but one or more of the following applications do not appear in the Files Of Type list box: dBASE, Text Files, Microsoft Excel. However, if you rerun the Microsoft Office 97 or Microsoft Access 97 setup program, the ISAM drivers for the applications are checked as installed.

CAUSE

This may be caused by invalid information in the Windows registry, or by a missing or corrupted dynamic-link library (.dll) file.

RESOLUTION

Uninstall and then reinstall the ISAM drivers so that they are reregistered properly.

Run the Microsoft Office 97 Setup. In the Options box, select Data Access, and then click Change Option. Click Database Drivers, and then click Change Option. Click to clear the check box for each ISAM driver that does not appear in the 'Save as dialog'. (NB: If the check box for the ISAM driver is unavailable just cancel out of setup.)

Exit Setup and in Windows Explorer rename (delete) the following files: MSEXCL35.DLL (Microsoft Excel), MSTEXT35.DLL (Text), MSXBSE35.DLL (dBASE). Close Windows Explorer. Restart Setup and click to select the check box for each ISAM driver that you want to reinstall. After setup is finished, the additional ISAM drivers should now appear in the list of files in the Save as dialog.

Hope you'll find this you's full [idea]
