Is it possible to import data into an excel document from another excel doc that is protected and shared using the get external data funtionality?

I have one spreadsheet stored to the network. It has protection and is shared so multiple people can be editing it at once.

I would like to have another spreadsheet stored locally that can import the data from the shared document and run reports.

This works fine if the network spreadsheet is not protected and not shared, but if either are set up, it doesn't seem to work.

Any ideas?

Jon,

I know you can import a workbook into a new one, even on different drives, that's want you want to do, right? Did you try unprotecting the source workbook? I don't see a reason why you can't import this info, and then refresh it anytime you want. I've had a problem in the past not being able to save the source file when the query file is open. You might want to check to if your users are diabling macros when they are in the file editing. If macros of the source file are turned off by someone else, you can't run it from your query file.

Sorry about the macro info, that's not true, disregard that.

Hi,

"...it doesn't seem to work."

Exactly WHAT is not working. Please be specific and detailed.
