We are a print pub that is interested in implementing a barcode system into our job tracking system.

We would have around 5 places where batch scanners could be placed , and at the end of the night download the info in to a host computer connected to win 2000 server running SQL 7, Job Manager, Virtual Ticket, Access 2000

What equipment doe we need, RF is a possibility.
Programming the scanners?
Any and all help is needed

Thanks Greg

Well visit this site and have a look around
you really don't need RF.
you could just have a PC on a network. the cost of a PC today is cheaper the an RF unit anyway. Plus you have a computer with al its capablity.
Then have it running a Access program.
Attach a Keyboard wedge barcode scanner to the PC
and scan to your hearts content.
The barcode info would go directly into the Access database just as though you typed it in.
take alook at these two .AVI files

Then to create Barcodes, purchase a Barcode font, which is loaded like any other True type font.
Use you existing Access report and just add a barcode or two to it.
look at this page:

And you can download DEMO font for tesing FREE

If I have any further questions I will post them
Thanks Greg

I liked Doug's solution however as an alternative, you could investigate the Symbol spt1740 palm device with integrated laser and RF capability. This gives you the flexibility of some mobility with your scanner (your not tied to a pc via a corded wedge) and you also have the flexibility of including logic on the device. Your spt1740 will transmit directly to a nifty antenna in your shop which is connected to your host computer.

On the other hand, if the RF version of the SPT1700 is too expensive, the batch version is quite handy and can easily be integrated directly with your access application (I have done this successfully with the batch SPT1700, it was quite simple to do).

Where probably going to go with one or two of the palm readers and maybe a wand or two.
Now on to the next steps to try a get all this stuff to work and be able to place the data on my SQL
Server
LOTS OF FUN Greg

If you use Access or VB as your go between to SQL Server and the ODBC drivers it should be easy.

You need a program on the Palm that saves data to an ASCII text file.
Then have the VB or Access program link to it and also link to SQL with ODBC and bingo it's a piece of cake.

I have a DEMO already in place.
