I would like to develop some means of creating a standard header/footer for our company documents/white papers.

I would visualize it as something where I could create the header/footer once and it would appear on all of our documents just like that. Then, if we decided to modify our header/footer, we would change it once and all our documents would be affected.

I know I could build a template. But, I do not believe that if I changed something in the template, that it would affect all previous documents created using that template.
I might be wrong about that.

Also ... each of our headers contains the title of the document. I would like to be able to put some sort of variable into the header layout and then assign a document variable with the value of the title and that value would show up within the header.

Very ambitious, I know. But if we can pull it off it would be very valuable.

I think you really need to make a template. Indeed, previous documents will not be changed when the template is changed, I'm afraid you'll have to copy and paste the contents into the new template. More reason to really think carefully about the lay out of your template I guess.
You can use an opening window which prompts for the document title, and paste this for instance at a specified bookmark in the header of the document.

good luck...
