Is there a reliable way to mount iso/img files in Vista?

I found sites suggesting virtualclone and other programs, but none of them worked on my Vista Ultimate install.

And why does MS distribiute files in a format that requires us to burn CD/DVDs?

Guess they want to overflow more landfills, the frickin jerks.

They become less thought out each year, it's saturated the entire company now.

Use ISO image files"
Security updates are available on ISO-9660 DVD5 image files from the Microsoft Download Center

A long thread which gets more interesting near the end.

How can I store the image of a DVD disk on my PC and then view it?

Burning ISO images to DVD on Microsoft Windows Vista

The first link is for obtaining ISO images. I didn't see anyhing about using the images other than burning a DVD.

The second and third links suggest products I already tried.

Thanks anyway.

WHat I'd hoped to find is a MS supported product for what they are distributing...

They're turning into such thoughtless jerks, may as well just buy a MAC...

There is a piece of software out there called ISOBuster. It will allow you to extract all the files from the ISO file so you can store them on your network. Best of all the software is free.

No matter what solution Microsoft went with there would be people that aren't happy with it. We should be content in the fact that Microsoft has begun to move away from proprity methods and provides industry standard file types such as ISO so that we as admin's can do with the files as we please. They can be burned to disk, opened with a program such as ISO Buster and copied to a network share for an install, mounted to a VMWare server as a virtual CD/DVD device for easy install on virtual machines (I assume that the Virtual Server can do this as well).

I'm not even going to bother responding to your I'll just buy a MAC comment.

Microsoft provides the Virtual CD-ROM Control Panel to do this.

Regretfully it will not function on 64 bit systems (XP or Vista) but it works great on 32 bit Vista.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Was the Virtual Clone Drive (free)

a program that you tried, it works for me on Ultimate (32 bit), in so far as it reads the Image and allows me to do whatever I want.

Thanks fo rthe responses, I did get IsoBuster to work and didn't test beyond that.
