IMAP4Srv Fails to start

I have an Exchange server that fails to start IMAP4SRV. All of the underlying dependent services are running. The odd thing is that after 24-48 hours the IMAP$SRV service will start on its own???? The Error #5 (Unexpected Error 0x80004005)) is recorded in the event log.

Have you tried applying a service pack to update Exchange? This a bit of a heavy duty method to fix something, but applying SP2 / 3 for Exchange will 'tidy up' an often fix Exchange oddies ('he says from bitter experience of sorting flaky exchange 2000 installs'!!)
