Imaging a database machine

Has anyone imaged an SQL Server machine? We had someone run Adaptec sw to get an image, but they left the MSSQL Service running. The result was a suspect database. I'm wondering if turning off the MSSQL Service will prevent that. Has anyone had any luck here?

It would probably work. However in general you are much better off using SQL server to do its own backups. As it makes sure the database is in a recoverable format.
