Is there something that can be done to make an image gallery looks better before images are loaded? Would you suggest a placeholder of some sort or is there another way to go about this using CSS?

Image galleries usually are made for fun. So I think it is Ok if it looks funny without images too.
Or you would like to rephrase and give us more details. Maybe an URL or at least a screenshot.

Or maybe, just define the height and width of each image, so it doesn't look so funny.
