When i am doing work in ANY program there is an occasional stop for about 3-5 seconds for what seems like a "catch-up". It then works freely for a few minutes. I am running win 98SE, athlon 1000, 512 Ram. I am not taxing any component that i can see. I would like a reason and solution if anyone can help. thanks

I have had a similar problem with a dodgy hard disk. Does the HDD make any odd noises during the pause? You may here the heads seeking, or re-reading a dodgy sector.

Worth running scandisk with the 'thorough' option on to check the disk surface.

Of course, it could be something else entirely!

U know Ben, I can't say for sure because the room is rather noisy with several big printers. I will listen closely tomorrow. scandisk has shown nothing out of the ordinary.
