I'm new to Apples.
I am having trouble connecting an iMac via its built-in Ethernet port to a Win2K Pro machine running Appletalk (I assume it needs to be running Appletalk).
Both machines connect to ISPs using dynamic IP and I don't want to mess this up on the Mac (I'm OK with this on the PC but am not sure things work the same way on the Mac).
If I bind Appletalk to Ethernet, will assigning an IP address to the machine leave the PPP IP address (equivalent to DUN on the PC, I assume) dynamic?
If the workgroup on the PC is called "xxx" do I need something on the Mac called the same? Or do I need to set up a Domain (as opposed to a workgroup) on the PC? What about a subnet mask? If I look in My Network Places on the PC is see the PC itself but not the Mac. File sharing is enabled on the Mac.
Finally, I am using a cross-over Cat 5 cable to connect the machines.
HELP!!!!!
Thanks.
Tony.

You have to install Servers for Macintosh, because the Mac can't use TCP/IP to connect to an Win2K box without third party software. Once installed you can share the volumes using Mac servers.

Good Luck

Is Servers for Macintosh part of the OS9 dist or does it need to be purchased separately? (Sorry if obvious question but I don't currently have access to the Mac so can't look.)
Thanks for the help.
Tony.

Matt means adding services for Mac to the Windows box. Then the Win2k box appears in chooser as an appletalk server.

Thanks Zelandakh. I already have Appletalk at a Protocol on the Win2K box; is there a Mac service as well? Can't see one listed but petrhaps it's on the CD-ROM.

Think about it again, not sure Machintosh Servers are on Windows 2000 Desktop. I know its on the server version.

In which case the only way you can get the Mac to see it is to use a software called Dave which you can get the Mac to see the Windows 2000 Desktop, and the Windows 2000 Desktop to see the Mac if you turn the filesharing on.

Or you could use MacLan Connect.

Or you could have a look at this website:
