Illustrator is Slow!!!

I have a Dell 8200 P4 1.8 and the only program that slows it to a crawl is Illustrator.

I con process 75meg files in Photoshop and it zooms right along.

I noticed the same thing on a friend’s computer.

Is this typical?
Or is there something that I need to configure.

Are you talking about Illustrator 10? I've got it running on a reasonably powerful G4 Mac and it's performance seems to be dependent on the operating system. On OS 9, which I have to use for various reasons, it runs painfully slow. Switch to OS X and it runs like a dream! Maybe it's the same on PCs and requires XP to run correctly? I don't really know but I've gone back to Illustrator 9 for now!

I'm running Illustrator 8 on Windows XP.

But my friend is running 9 on Windows 98 on an older computer then mine and it is painfully slow as well.

I don't see why it should be since the files are generally fairly small.
