I do a lot of designing in Illustrator and Photoshop, and my new Print Bureau won't accept .EPS, but want everything in Quark. If I have everything done in Illustrator, say for a postcard, what is the best way to drop that into Quark? I tried "Edit...Insert Object..." and then telling it I was inserting an Illustrator file, but when all was said and done, the image was teeny-tiny, and it would not expand to the full boundary in Quark, no matter what I tried. And when I have tried copying and pasting from Photoshop, the printer says the image comes out low-res--so for some reason it is not holding the resolution when I insert. Any ideas? I have a whole set of posters and postcards that need to be done ASAP...thanks in advance :)

Make your Quark document at the finished size (say 6"x4" for a postcard), then make a picture box the same size. With the picture box selected, go Edit > Get Picture. If your Illustrator files are saved as .eps (not .ai) you'll be able to import them into Quark. You may have to play around with position with the "hand tool" (like Adobe's open arrow) to get them in the right spot.

Are you making a picture box in Quark? Then you choose Command./E for "get picture".

You would need to set up your Quark document to the needed end size. Your illustrator file must be saved as eps. and collected with the document.

I'm guessing your vendor doesn't want an illustrator file to print from, but would accept the files as inserted in Quark.

What kind of service bureau can't place an .eps for ouput? I'd change print bureau's to one more accomidating and customer friendly.

ok, to clarify...i am making the quark document at the finished size. i have used the get picture command, but can not remember if i "got" a file that was an .eps or just a photoshop image. i will save the files as .eps and try again. thanks for all the help. if anyone has any ideas besides using the "get picture" command, please let me know. i agree that the print bureau should cater more to designers, lol, but they really seem to love quark for some reason and when i try to slip in an illustrator or .eps, i get a call.

Print shops should be able to cater for almost every filetype, if they don't, they loose business. I take it they are a small backyard place who can't afford the programs etc.
Have you tried telling them, "That's all you getting, make it work?"

The thing is, many print shops have been stung in the past with, shall we say, very unclear EPS files. I'm sure they are more than capable of placing the file in Quark, but they are probably asking you to do it instead so that there is no question of how it's placed and cropped.

Now, you would think that it would be obvious from the eps, but you'd be suprised what some "designers" end up doing. Also, sometimes an EPS in one application - or even a different version of the same application - will display the artboard at different sizes than what was originally set, which is confusing if the designer is depending on it. If the designer adds crop marks manually to the eps, it's not unusual for them to be inaccurate. For those and other reasons, many small print shops ask for it to be placed in Quark.

Of course, if you normally set up your EPS files correctly, they shouldn't have to ask you to this, so it may be worth asking them if there's a specific problem. For example, there might be a multi-page document, in which case I'd say it's a reasonable request.

I know that there is a extention ( probably included on Extensis QXtools) that converts vector files (eps, ai) in to quark files. However it's not ideal because the last time i used it it geave me a headache. It doesn't convert everything from the original file. Probably worth a go.
Possibly because you don't have a postscript printer it won't print an eps nither directly from illustrator or indirectly from quark. One way might be to save the artwork as pdf and then print it.
The other way is to save your work in illustrator as ai, eps or pdf with bleeds and crop marks then oppen it in photoshop (cmyk, 300dpi).
Flatten the image (Layer>flatten image) then save the image as tiff.
Oppen quark, kreate a new file: on the dimensions type the exact size as your original design ( ex.your business card) then on the artboard make a picture box from the tools palet.Make shore the box is 4-5mm biger than the document on each side.Click in to the box, then CTRL (apple) +E then chose the tiff file you created earlyer. With the hand icon selected(on the tools palet) press CTRL(Apple) +shift+M to centre the image in the box.. For fine adjustments in the box click in the box with the hand and drag the image as you wish.
